Northern Australia and in particular the Northern Territory has long been a magnet for southern anglers keen to try their hand at tropical sportfishing. While many may see the Top End as a barramundi destination – a reputation it certainly deserves – barra are not the only glamour species as NT waters have an abundance of other exciting tropical sportfish that can be targeted using lures.
In the pristine tropical blue waters accessed by Seven Spirit Bay Wilderness Lodge, lightning-fast Spanish mackerel which grow to over 1.5m in length and sport a fearsome set of razor-sharp dentures scythe effortlessly through baitfish, hard-pulling trevally species prowl the inshore reefs, aerobatic queenfish provide spectacular action when hooked, and schools of chunky longtail tuna boil on the surface, tempting anglers to cast a metal baitfish into the melee.
Spectacular, brightly-coloured reef species such as coral trout, golden snapper and bluebone are readily targeted over the inshore reef patches; not only are they great to catch but they are equally as good on the dinner plate. Hard-pulling black jewfish and cobia will provide a good workout for both angler and tackle.
And then there is the barramundi. This iconic tropical fish species is highly regarded by recreational anglers by virtue of its inclination to vigorously attack an artificial bait such as a lure or fly. Once hooked on rod and line, they exhibit powerful fighting qualities which often sees them leaping clear of the water with violent head shakes and gill rattles. For many anglers, the “holy grail” is to land a wild barramundi that measures over the 1 metre mark. But by the very nature of barra fishing, you never know when that moment when a big barra inhales your lure might happen. One thing for certain is that it does happen in the beautiful sandy creeks along the Cobourg Peninsula.
However, barra are not the only predator in the estuarine creeks. Ambush merchants such as mangrove jack and estuary cod are plentiful, as are more mobile species such as threadfin salmon, tarpon and queenfish.
